This military service began on August 4, 1790, when Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton founded the Revenue Marine to enforce customs and prevent smuggling. It later became the Revenue Cutter Service. In 1915, it merged with the Life-Saving Service to officially adopt the name United States Coast Guard.
